053: I am grateful for diversity

Canada, and Vancouver in particular, celebrate cultural and individual diversity. Those values are another reason that I am grateful that I live where I do. Just on this block alone are people from nearly every corner of the Earth.

We all live with the objective of being happy; our lives are all different and yet the same. ~ Anne Frank

We are all the same but each of us are unique; different. What a boring world it would be if everything were uniform; we all looked the same; liked the same music; spoke the same language; dressed the same; loved the same.

What is diversity?

This is the best definition of diversity I found:

The concept of diversity encompasses acceptance and respect.
It means understanding that each individual is unique,
and recognizing our individual differences. These can be along
the dimensions of race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, socio-economic status, age, physical abilities, religious beliefs,
political beliefs, or other ideologies. It is the exploration
of these differences in a safe, positive, and nurturing environment.
It is about understanding each other and moving beyond
simple tolerance to embracing and celebrating the
rich dimensions of diversity contained within each individual.
