I was in a huge panic this morning. I was out of cereal. Thankfully, after my job interview today, I had my wits about me enough to actually hit the grocery store and my beloved cereal aisle. I could hear my Mom’s voice telling me, “no junk cereal”, meaning the sugary sweet stuff I like to treat myself with now again. I looked around, and, realizing she is really 4300 miles away, I picked up some Cap’n Crunch and some Honey Bunches of Oats.
Hey, I had Multi-grain Cheerios last week.
What is cereal?
Cereal is “part of your nutritious breakfast” and “a packaged breakfast food. It is eaten cold, usually mixed with milk or water, but sometimes eaten dry. Some cereals, such as oatmeal, may be served hot as porridge. Some companies promote their products for the health benefits from eating oat-based and high-fiber cereals. Cereals may be fortified with vitamins. Some cereals are made with high sugar content.” [source]
One of my absolute favorite snacks, morning, noon or night is cereal. It doesn’t matter what kind, hot, cold, sweet, crunchy or gooey. I love it all, even the stuff that tastes like cardboard.
Some people say, “cereal is for kids.” Really? Jerry Seinfeld likes cereal and he’s a grown up and my brother in adult cereal love.
Cereal commercials had some of the most memorable characters – Tony the Tiger, Cap’n Crunch, the Lucky Charms leprechaun, the Trix Rabbit, The Sugar Smacks Frog, The Sugar Crisp Bear and Snap, Crackle and Pop. I think a lot of them are still are still kicking. They must all weigh 800 pounds with all those empty carbohydrates.
Of course, there was Mikey too:
As well as being inundated with advertising, I do believe my love of cereal stems from being a child and eating cereal at my grandmother’s kitchen table out of one of those white, unbreakable corning ware bowls as we chatted about the day and she hummed away in the kitchen, doing her thing. I sure do miss her.
Nanny would pour me out the poverty puffs, light as a feather, from a giant bag and I would douse them in honey or sugar (brown or white) and gobble away.
One thing is for sure, I am definitely regular.
Thank you cereal!
