056: I am grateful for socks

With the chill in the air this morning it was a little cold in my office. I pulled on some warm socks to keep my tootsies warm. The socks in today’s picture sure do look warm. If you’re interested in knitting me a pair you can get the pattern from Knitting Vintage Socks.

I won’t hold my breath, but thanks for considering it for even a moment.

When I was a kid, if I opened a Christmas present and saw socks my heart sank. I was hoping for another Star Wars action figure and got socks instead. Today I love the feel of a new pair of socks. Priorities change I guess.

What are socks?

Socks are “hosiery consisting of a cloth covering for the foot; worn inside the shoe; reaches to between the ankle and the knee.” [source]

According to wikipedia, socks are designed to:

  • ease chafing between the foot and footwear
  • protect footwear by absorbing perspiration and dead skin lost from the foot
  • provide comfort
  • be fashionable
  • keep the feet warm
  • make a fashion statement
  • soak up blood, from the foot if wounded (ouch!)

Wait a minute. There are a few other things that socks are good for, not the least of which is puppetry. Check out “Johnny Cash Tribute by the Scottish Falsetto Sock Puppet Theatre”:

That was good for a giggle. Thank you socks!

Okay that was totally great. I love the puppet socks. And I am grateful that I have good running socks to help me run faster, good knee high socks for my comfy shoes and several old cozy socks to keep my feet warm in bed.
I'm also grateful that (as far as I can remember except for the odd blister)my socks haven't had to soak up any of my blood. (is that really part of the definition?)
